Market Overview

Most incumbent and competitive carriers, ISPs and cable operators (MSOs) offer Internet access, managed voice (TDM and VoIP) services and managed IP VPN services over T1 (PDH) circuits. Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) services in addition to managed voice services are the leading choices for businesses requiring reliable broadband access to the Internet for their data and voice services over the copper PDH access network infrastructure. With the addition of managed IP VPNs, a service provider can offer the complete portfolio of converged voice and data services for multi-site enterprises of all sizes.

According to the Vertical Systems Group, fewer than sixteen percent of commercial buildings in the United States had access to fiber in 2007 and the percentage of fiber-connected buildings with twenty or more employees has increased by about five percent over the past four years. Therefore, these buildings will connect to the network via copper for business voice and data services, and the most commonly deployed network connection for these services is T1s or T3s for higher bandwidth applications.

The Challenge

Converged services are a source of continued growth for service providers but have become increasingly commoditized in certain markets. How can service providers increase their average revenue per user (ARPU) and maintain margins without significant increases in CapEx and OpEx spending?

Given the increasing competitive pressures to offer converged services at lower prices, service providers must find ways to reduce their CapEx and OpEx as well as grow their revenue by offering new services, such as IP VPNs, over the existing PDH network infrastructure.

How do service providers offer business voice (TDM and VoIP) and data services reliably and cost effectively over these copper PDH access network connections?

The Solution

Turin Networks iConnect for Converged Services addresses the OpEx and CapEx challenges while enabling service providers to offer a complete converged services portfolio through the Traverse PacketEdge™ 1200 (TPE-1200) converged services aggregator and Adit® 600 converged services access gateway.

The Traverse PacketEdge™ 1200 (TPE-1200) is the industry's highest density, smallest footprint converged services aggregator that enables service providers to aggregate Internet Access, VoIP, and IP VPN services for handoff to their IP service networks.

The The Adit® 600 converged services access gateway is a fully modular platform that can provide a SIP or MGCP VoIP gateway, router, firewall and IP VPN client through add-in cards. Adit is ideal for use as customer located equipment (CLE) with IP managed services.

By efficiently aggregating converged IP and TDM services over an individual DS1 (1.5Mbps) or up to eight bonded DS1 (12Mbps) circuits per subscriber inside twelve channelized DS3s or a clear channel DS3 circuit, the TPE-1200 eliminates the need for service providers to purchase costly channelized DS3 cards and protocol processor cards for their edge routers.

The TPE-1200 can reduce CapEx up to 87 percent over competing edge router-based solutions. Optimized for deployments in central offices and carrier colocation facilities, the TPE-1200 is easily integrated into the existing network infrastructure so service providers can quickly activate revenue generating subscriber services with no configuration changes to their existing customer premise devices and minimal configuration changes to their service edge routers to the Internet, IP telephony network, or IP/MPLS core network.

The Adit 600 converged services access gateway provides all enterprise WAN voice and data connectivity within a single modular platform. With the Adit 600 deployed at the customer premises, service providers can deliver Internet access, managed voice services and managed site-to-site IP VPNs over an individual DS1 or up to eight bonded DS1 (12Mbps) circuits. The Adit 600 supports connectivity of analog (POTS), ISDN, and IP telephones, PBXs and enterprise LANs enabling service provider to support a broad range of enterprise equipment and services. Simple remote provisioning on the Adit 600 activates new services.
